An update on DH3 from SOAR.
~ DH3 Update ~
As many of you know, SOAR admitted a hatch-year 2026 (HY26) Bald Eagle from the Decorah Fish Hatchery, known as DH3.
DH3 has had a Blood Lead Level done and result was a low reading. A low reading is so small an amount (less than 0.03 ppm) the machine cannot measure it. No wing or leg fractures were felt on exam, but the wing droop tells us that there is a soft tissue injury.
DH3 has:
** had a beak depth measurement done to help us determine sex and at 3.2 cm beak depth is a male,
** received two doses of Vitamin K on admit to help with clotting. This is based on seeing blood in the mouth and that is usually a sign of internal bleeding,
** been given Ivomec and Droncit, which is standard protocol to remove internal and external parasites, and
** has gained a bit over half a pound in intensive care.
DH3 is NOW in a 10x20 ft flight pen with a HY25 Bald Eagle from O’Brien County. In this flight pen, the eaglets will gain strength, weight, and begin there recovery.
SOAR’s version of Bald Eagle physical therapy is allowing the eagle to recover at their own pace. Confident flight and maneuverability in each space tells us it’s time for that eagle to move. ICU to 10x20 ft pen to 60 ft flight pen to the 100 ft Bald Eagle flight pen. Right now DH3 is able to get to a low perch from the ground then use the “branch ladder” system to get up higher.
