Wingsday in Decorah

From Raptor Resource Project yesterday:

It was an eventful day at the North nest, beginning with an early-morning territorial challenge. The unknown male eagle (UM) who first captured DNF’s attention during Mr. North’s absence has not left the area and appears unwilling to give up.

The morning began with UM flying in to perch near DNF and Mr. North. While DNF voiced her displeasure, Mr. North responded by flying out to knock UM from his branch. UM circled and then landed in the nest, with Mr. North in pursuit. After ejecting him, Mr. North returned to the nest, where DNF joined him. The pair spent some time on nestorations: a welcome moment of calm after the disruption.

Decorah North Eagles - Mr. North has had enough. Displaces UM twice:

Around 10 AM, DNF flew into the nest, followed closely by UM. The North’s stood their ground and Mr. North again forced the intruder out. This encounter happened very quickly: set the speed on the video below to 0.25 and go to 35 seconds to catch the details.

Decorah North Eagles - Mr. North defends; kicks out UM; then copulation with DNF:

Although Mr. North did not make physical contact again, UM lingered nearby for much of the day and intruded on the nest once more at around 3:00. He also followed DNF, perched in nearby trees, and chased a fourth eagle. Throughout all of the encounters, Mr. North was particularly alert, vocalizing frequently and maintaining a watchful posture as he scanned the skies and surrounding perches.

We noted what appeared to be a slight irregularity with Mr. North’s left wing. However, he continued to fly, perch, and defend without obvious limitation. We’ll continue to watch, but at this point he appears fully engaged in normal activities.

Amid the tension, we also watched the pair work on the nest, copulate three times, and share a pheasant: albeit in a very eagle way. We’ve seen territorial incursions disrupt this nest before, so it was encouraging to see the Norths continuing to strengthen their bond and their nest despite the ongoing challenge from UM.

Thank you to our camera operators, moderators, and to everyone watching along with us. We’ll continue to monitor developments and share updates as they unfold.
