New York Mets first baseman Keith Hernandez testified today that he used āmassive amounts of cocaineā during the second half of the 1980 season and played a game under the influence of the drug.
He described that time as one of āromanceā between baseball players and the drug.
āI think it was the love-affair years . . . it was pretty prevalent,ā Hernandez said of cocaine use by players.
Testifying at a federal trial of a suspected drug dealer, Hernandez said he didnāt remember which game he played while druggedāonly that it was in the second half of the season.
