In answer to your question: yes, contestants are prompted to write either “Who” or “What” during the commercial break after their wagers are made. This allows for more time to think; more importantly, it ensures that no one has to lose because they forgot to phrase their answer in the form of a question.

I have a question I’d like to ask,if I may.When Alex tells you the category for final Jeopardy when you make your wager but before the question,are you also able to write “What is” to begin your answer?Or do you have to wait until you get the question to begin?It seems like that would be a few seconds longer to think if your having a difficult time with the answer.

I went to see a live taping of Jeopardy when I was a kid in school. It was still out of the New York studios and Art Fleming was the host.
